This is a most unique vintage Maru obi with a big sailing ship in an open sea.
A sailing ship and raging waves are expressed by dye and embroideries, it is quite a rare piece.

Actually the sailing ship is a galley, a type of ship that is propelled mainly by rowing, you can see a number of long paddles, near the bottom of the ship.
When I first saw the obi, it reminded me of a famous anime called ONE PIECE but then
noticed the paddles.
Why the sailing ship from 16th century is chosen as a motif of obi?
I could not tell the flag is from which country. The ship looks very similar to the ones in the famous painting of Battle of Lepanto. It could be Spanish or Italian ship.

The overwhelming composition with strong touch dye take our breath away but the details of the embroideries also is worthwhile to mention. The shading colors and using thicker black threads in places make the ship so powerful. Please note the exotic Pegasus and fish on the flags too.

The problem is, the whole ship does not show when the obi is worn! It is surely tailored as an obi- it has the special ending line (Kaikiri sen)which obi usually have, so it is not a remake item, it is an original obi. The whole ship is approx 135cm(53 inches) and some part, like flags are on the other side.
The gold couching is fallen off partially. Reddish dye stuff are on some gold couching, the painter of the obi might have thought more paint was needed.

We cannot recommend this obi to wear as an obi, it is a connoisseur's item. If you are looking for mysterious tapestry, this is it!
