This is an exceptionally unique pattern men's juban. Kimono lady and samurai are dyed artistically.
We don't know this scene means what, but you look it carefully, you can imagine what is going on.
Samurai is going to pull his sword, and kimono lady seems to have broken a dish.
It calls me up suggestions of a famous ghost story 'Bancho-sarayashiki'. In that story young girl was wrongly accused of breaking one dish of ten set, and killed. She became a ghost and number the dishes again and again and stop at nine.
I am not sure this picture is from that story or not.
It has some stains, and a tiny hole in the lapel. Lining has patina and stains. But as a whole it is in very good condition.
