This is a koginzashi noragi from pre WWII. Koginzashi is considered to be the most valuable sashiko(stitch) piece in Japan. It is from Aomori (Tohoku) district, and made of 'asa'(Japanese hemp). Incredibly elaborate stitches are done in the back and front chest. As some customers already know, kaginzashi is famous for its graceful white sashiko(stitches). People mended torn and worn spots by adding another layer of stitching and hid stains by dyeing it again with indigo. So this piece has beautiful indigo dyed sashiko part. I found the photo of this piece in a book, which titled 'Kyoto Shoin's Art Library of Japanese Textiles Vol.13 - Kogin and Sashiko Stitch'. It has a few small stains, but as a whole it can be said in excellent condition. |
