This is an antique cotton ranru, rug.
It is made of cotton, and padded with layered cotton fabrics.
Sashiko stitches are done over, and it is well worn over the stitches.
So both sides have WONDERFUL texture as photos show.
Fabrics have very soft and comfortable touch, and they seem to be hand spun and hand woven in early Meiji period(1868-1912) or earlier.
And it was the age of natural ai, so it has wonderful
ai color gradation.
Both sides have similar well worn texture.
This piece is superb, because machine woven cotton fabrics are not added in the later age, and its texture is made only by long time usage without any intentional¼£¼£artifact.
It is really an UNINTENDED ART!
