This is a vintage dounuki kimono, under kimono of two layered kimono set. Hems are stripe pattern silk, and bodice part is made of thin plain silk, and has wonderful itajime dyed pattern! It has some flaws as photos show, but as a whole it is in very good condition. *'Ita-jime' is the also called 'Kyoukechi'. 'Ita' means 'wood board', and 'jime' means 'sandwich and tighten'. Two wood boards have pattern, which are carved. Textile is sandwiched between two boards, and dystuff is poured the through the hole of the board. So the carved part is dyed with pigment. Textile can be folded and dyed, so the large part can be dyed at once. This technique is very old, and had been done from Nara era (717-784). Later this technique was offen done on the juban. We sometimes find beautiful red itajime dyeing in the juban from Meiji period. (or early Showa period) photo:azu |
