Well, that's enough of my bad Japanese. I hope, someday, to go to grad school (maybe in Japan!) and do a cross-cultural study of Japanese and American women, and the issues they face as modern citizens of their respective countries. I think kimono are a fascinating statement of femininity, as well as Japanese culture. So much care and local history, packed into a garment...it is truly wearable art.

I wonder just how hard it is to turn karinui into a kimono. I know I sound doubtful of the difficulty there, but that's not my intent! I have no doubt that it's very difficult, especially for me-- the most advanced sewing craft I can really do is make drink coasters from those little squares of plastic canvas...where you use a giant needle and yarn...

I'm not a seamstress, but I've always wanted to be able to sew. I don't think a karinui is probably the best place to start, but maybe someday I'll give it the old college try.

I've been browsing the fabric on Ichiroya a lot- one such bolt absolutely took my breath away, but before I knew it, it was sold! This fabric was offered twice, too. Guess I got unlucky. It's okay, though- I saved a picture of it!

I wonder about such karinui- were they just unfinished? Sample pieces? I bet some of them have quite interesting stories...a little bit like the idea that what wasn't spoken is just as telling as what has been said.

The one I've picked...I love shibori- don't you love that violet blue color, too?
