Kimono Flea Market ICHIROYA's News Letter No.173   04 Dec 2006

Dear Customers & Friends

Hello from Japan! This is Kimono Flea Market ICHIROYA's News Letter No.
173.
Last night, I(Ichiro) went to 'fugu' restaurant with my father and
mother. My mother Michiko is 76 years old, and she needs to have a surgery
next week, and I brought her to eat something delicious before the
surgery. Michiko has some diseases, as Yuka's father had. We always feel
they were not so old. However, considering that I am already 47 years
old, I have noticed parents are becoming 80. Michiko chose 'fugu' for
the dinner.

Have you ever eaten 'fugu'(pufferfish)?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pufferfish
Fugu menu is one of the expensive and classy menu in Japan. We rarely
eat fugu, but sometimes especially in winter, we eat 'fugu'. For me,
last night fugu menu may be third time of my life. Yesterday's
restaurant is not so expensive one for fugu, three-course meal are approx 130USD(I know this is way so expensive for one meal).
Site below link is not yesterday's restaurant, but the menu is
similar.

Flesh of fugu is white flesh, and for 'sashimi'( sliced fresh fish )
flesh are sliced very thin and arranged in the large plate. We call fugu
sashimi 'tessa'. We also boil fugu with vegetables in a 'nabe'(pan),
and we call fugu nabe 'tecchiri'. Fugu's white flesh has special kind of
resilience and tastes very delicate.
As you may know, fugu has lethal poison in the entrails. Fugu chef must
have a special license. In Japan, approx 50 people suffer from fugu
intoxation every year, and about 3 persons dye. Most accidents had roots
in amateur cooking of self-fished fugu.
I didn't know, but now I came to know the origin of the name of 'tessa'
and 'tecchiri'. Fugu has been also called 'teppou', which means 'gun'.
In olden times (maybe in Edo period), 'teppou'(gun) seldom shot home,
but when target was hit, it would have been lethal. People thought it
was similar to fugu toxin - rarely suffer, but when suffered, it could
be lethal!
In olden times, more people had to lost their lives with eating fugu,
but many people had eaten fugu with taking lethal risks. In Nagasaki
district, fugu is called as 'ganba', which means ' Have to eat fugu,
even if We have to prepare Ganba(Coffin) aside! '.

Be that as it may, a few days ago, we fortunately got supreme furisode
set, which we have never seen. They are set of 5 fabulous furisode, from
Taisho period(1912-1925), bold yuzen and rich embroidery work, and very
interesting design. They have same kamon - they had to be ordered by
very prosperous(incredibly rich) family.
We think this piece is the best piece of this year. It must be a great
Christmas present to our site!
It is expensive, but it has great value only to look. We will list it
tomorrow with other interesting kimono. Please don't miss it.

By the way, recently I am becoming interested in more older fabric, or
more various fabrics we have seldom sold. For examples, we have never
sold Miyako Jofu, Echigo Jofu and others. We thought our customers may
not be interested in these particular weaving. However, recently we
noticed that we had to introduce them and we would like to share more
information about Japanese traditional weaving and dyeing. Some valuable
weaving like Miyako, Echigo are very expensive ( for examples, Miyako
Jofu is sold about 11000 USD ), if we can get vintage ones, which are
not able to be worn already, we can offer them at comparatively moderate
( it may be little bit expensive --- ) price. This year is ending, but
next year, we will list more various weaving and dyeing at our site.

Thank you very much for reading to the end.
We are listing this awesome furisode set I mentioned and other furisode,
kimono, shibori yukata, bolts and of course please do not miss charming
antique items too.
We wish you a wonderful shiwasu(December).
